Given that there are two events, A & B. The probability of the union of the two events under different circumstance are shown below.
Two events are mutually exclusive, P(A U B) = P(A) + P(B)
Two events are not mutually exclusive, P(A U B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A n B)
Product rule of probability
The joint probability for the two events A and B are defined as follow.
Two events are independent, P(A n B) = P(A) x P(B)
Two events are dependent, P(A n B) = P(A) x P(A|B)
